Community Centered & Collectively Decided Upon 〰️

Typically, the people who decide what resources go towards Black farmers are not farmers, members of that community, or a part of the food system.

A racially just food system must be community-led, which means providing Black farmers with the resources and power to make decisions and feed their communities.

Black Farmer Fund empowers community-led farming and food systems businesses in the northeast through our fund by providing financial support and technical assistance.

Black Farmer Fund flips the typical power dynamic through our community-led Investment Committee, which brings together Black farmers, restauranteurs, herbalists, caterers, and chefs from all over the Northeast to decide who gets funding.

at the CENTER of

“In Our Hands”

is our investment committee;

BLACK FARMER FUND IS CREATING SPACE TO PRACTICE COLLECTIVe DECISION-MAKING AROUND FUNDING BLACK FOOD BUSINESSES.

The Investment Committee

is made up of 10 farming and food business community members from our previous Pilot Community (now called the Investment Committee), Pilot Cohort (previous businesses that were funded) and new members representing states from across the northeast. This intentional mixture of people brings together the historical knowledge of the funding process and new lived experiences into the committee.

OUR FUNDING PROCESS

is building on the knowledge from the pilot phase and expanding beyond New York to support work being done in other states. Our next fund will be distributed to farming and food businesses in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Throughout their two year term of meetings for building community, learning together and collaborating on self governance, the Investment Committee will select the new businesses that are funded for this round and continue to plant seeds for the future of Black Farmer Fund.
